Don’t Know What Career You Want After GCSEs? Start Here

“What do you want to do when you leave school?”

It sounds like a simple question. But at 16, it can be an incredibly difficult one to answer.

You might know which subjects you enjoy. You might know whether you prefer practical work or sitting in a classroom. You might know that you’re interested in engineering, technology, construction or energy.

But knowing exactly which career you want? That’s different.

How are you supposed to choose between careers you’ve never heard of?

Most 16-year-olds aren’t going to know exactly what an Instrument Technician does. Or the difference between an Electrical Technician and an Automation Technician. Or what a Commissioning Engineer actually commissions. Or how someone becomes a Wind Turbine Technician.

And that’s completely understandable.

You don’t need to have your entire career figured out at 16. What you do need is a way to start exploring what might suit you.

Stop Trying to Pick Your Forever Job

One of the biggest mistakes young people can make when thinking about careers is believing they’re choosing something they’ll have to do forever.

Careers don’t necessarily work like that.

People progress. They specialise. They retrain. They move between industries. They discover new opportunities. And sometimes they move into careers that barely existed when they first left school.

The energy industry is a particularly good example.

Someone who started their career working on traditional industrial equipment might later use similar skills within offshore wind, hydrogen, power generation or data centres.

Someone who started as an apprentice could eventually become a supervisor, specialist, engineer or manager.

Your first decision matters. But it doesn’t need to determine every decision that follows.

Think of it as choosing a starting direction, not your final destination.

Start With What You Actually Enjoy

Instead of asking “What job do I want?”, try asking “What kind of problems do I enjoy solving?”

That question can be much more useful. Let’s look at a few examples.

Do You Like Taking Things Apart and Understanding How They Work?

You might enjoy a Mechanical career.

Mechanical technicians and engineers can work with equipment such as:

  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Turbines
  • Valves
  • Gearboxes
  • Bearings
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Rotating equipment

A Mechanical Career Pathway

You might spend your career maintaining equipment, diagnosing problems, installing machinery or helping commission new systems.

A potential pathway could look like: Mechanical Apprentice → Mechanical Technician → Senior Mechanical Technician → Mechanical Supervisor → Mechanical Lead.

But that’s only one possible route.

Are You Interested in Electricity and How Things Are Powered?

Explore Electrical careers.

Electrical professionals work with the systems responsible for safely supplying and controlling electrical power.

Depending on the role, that could involve:

  • Motors
  • Switchgear
  • Cables
  • Electrical protection
  • Drives
  • Transformers
  • HV and LV systems
  • Electrical testing
  • Fault finding

An Electrical Career Pathway

You could potentially work across industries ranging from offshore wind and nuclear to manufacturing and data centres.

A pathway might begin: Electrical Apprentice → Electrical Technician → Senior Electrical Technician → Electrical Supervisor → Electrical Lead.

And later branch into commissioning, E&I, HV specialisms or other technical areas.

Do You Like Precision, Testing and Working Out Why Something Isn’t Reading Correctly?

You might find Instrumentation interesting.

Industrial facilities need to constantly measure what’s happening inside their systems: pressure, temperature, flow and level.

Instrumentation professionals work with the equipment providing that information. That can include:

  • Sensors
  • Transmitters
  • Control valves
  • Measurement equipment
  • Calibration
  • Loop checking
  • Testing
  • Fault finding

Where Instrumentation Can Lead

Instrumentation can also create routes towards automation, controls and commissioning.

Do You Like Computers but Also Want to Work With Real Equipment?

Don’t assume your only option is a traditional IT career. You might be interested in Automation and Control Systems.

Modern industrial facilities use computer-based systems to monitor and control equipment.

Automation professionals can work with technologies such as:

  • PLCs
  • SCADA
  • DCS
  • HMI systems
  • Industrial networks
  • Sensors
  • Control systems
  • Process automation

Where Computers Meet Engineering

It can combine elements of computers, electrical, instrumentation and engineering.

As industrial facilities become increasingly automated and digitally connected, these combinations of skills can become particularly valuable.

Do You Like Building and Making Things?

Consider careers in Welding and Fabrication.

Energy and infrastructure projects require huge amounts of equipment and structures to be manufactured and assembled.

Welders and fabricators can work on:

  • Pipework
  • Structural steel
  • Modules
  • Platforms
  • Vessels
  • Supports
  • Industrial equipment

Practical Work Where Quality Matters

It’s practical work where skill, precision and quality matter.

With experience and additional qualifications, people can develop into specialist welding, supervisory, quality or inspection-related careers.

Do You Like Understanding How an Entire System Works?

You might be interested in Process Operations.

Instead of specialising purely in maintaining one type of equipment, Process Operators help operate industrial facilities safely and efficiently.

That might involve:

  • Monitoring processes
  • Operating equipment
  • Control room activities
  • Process safety
  • Troubleshooting
  • Permit-to-work systems
  • Emergency procedures

Where Process Operations Careers Exist

These roles can exist across oil & gas, LNG, chemicals, hydrogen, power generation and manufacturing.

Do You Like Variety?

Then multidisciplinary careers may eventually appeal to you.

For example, E&I — Electrical & Instrumentation — combines elements of two technical disciplines.

Or commissioning brings multiple disciplines together when new equipment and systems need to be tested and proven before entering operation.

Commissioning teams can include:

  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Instrumentation
  • Automation
  • Process
  • Engineering

You Don’t Need One Narrow Technical Box

You don’t necessarily need to choose one narrow technical box for your entire career.

Think About How You Like to Learn

Choosing a career is only half the decision. You also need to think about how you want to get there.

Some people learn best by doing. Others enjoy academic study. Some want a combination.

That can influence which route you choose after GCSEs.

If You Want to Work and Learn

Consider an apprenticeship.

For someone who enjoys practical learning and feels ready for the workplace, this can be a strong route.

You can potentially:

  • Earn a salary
  • Gain qualifications
  • Build practical experience
  • Learn from experienced professionals

If You Want More Time to Develop Technical Skills

If you want more time to develop technical skills, consider college.

A technical college course can help you develop foundational knowledge and practical skills before progressing into employment, an apprenticeship or further study.

If You Want Technical Education With Industry Experience

Explore T Levels. They combine substantial technical education with an industry placement.

If You Enjoy Academic Study

A Levels and university may be appropriate, particularly if you’re interested in engineering careers that commonly require degree-level education.

There isn’t one route that is automatically better than the others. The right route depends on the person and the career.

Your GCSE Results Don’t Decide Your Entire Future

GCSE results can affect your immediate options.

Some apprenticeships have minimum entry requirements. College courses have entry requirements. Sixth forms and T Levels have requirements.

But your GCSE results aren’t a prediction of what your career will eventually become.

If you don’t get the grades you wanted, you may need to:

  • Resit a subject
  • Take a different course
  • Complete an additional qualification
  • Enter through another apprenticeship level
  • Take an alternative route

A Different Journey Doesn’t Mean a Different Destination

That might change the journey. It doesn’t necessarily change the destination.

Your First Job Doesn’t Decide Your Last Job Either

Imagine someone starts as an Instrument Apprentice. Their career might eventually become: Instrument Apprentice → Instrument Technician → Instrument Commissioning Technician → Commissioning Engineer.

Another person could start: Electrical Apprentice → Electrical Technician → E&I Technician → Commissioning Technician → Commissioning Supervisor.

Someone else might progress: Mechanical Apprentice → Mechanical Technician → Rotating Equipment Technician → Mechanical Supervisor.

Technical careers can branch. That’s important because industries change too.

The Energy Industry You’ll Work In Could Look Very Different

If you’re leaving school now, you could potentially still be working in the 2070s. Think about that.

Nobody can accurately predict exactly what the energy industry will look like throughout your entire career.

Technology will change. Industries will develop. Some technologies will grow. Others may decline. New careers will appear.

But many fundamental technical skills will continue to matter. We will still need people who understand:

  • Electricity
  • Mechanical equipment
  • Engineering
  • Control systems
  • Instrumentation
  • Automation
  • Construction
  • Safety
  • Maintenance
  • Technical problem-solving

Think About Skills, Not Just Job Titles

That’s another reason to think about skills, rather than obsessing over one particular job title.

Build Skills That Give You Options

Imagine two ways of thinking about your career.

The first is: “I want to become an Electrical Technician.” That’s useful. It gives you direction.

But now go deeper. You could instead think: “I want to develop strong electrical skills, understand industrial equipment, become good at fault finding and eventually gain experience with high-voltage systems and commissioning.”

Now you’re building something much more powerful. You’re building a collection of skills.

Those skills might eventually be valuable across:

  • Offshore Wind
  • Power Generation
  • Nuclear
  • Oil & Gas
  • Hydrogen
  • Manufacturing
  • Data Centres
  • Marine
  • Major Infrastructure

Your Job Title May Change

Your job title may change. Your underlying skills remain valuable.

Don’t Just Follow What Your Friends Are Doing

This is an easy trap after GCSEs.

Your friends are going to a particular college. So you go too. They’re staying at sixth form. So you stay. Someone gets an apprenticeship. Suddenly everyone wants an apprenticeship.

But you’re the person who has to live with the decision.

Ask yourself: does this route actually suit me?

There’s nothing wrong with choosing the same route as your friends. Just make sure you’re choosing it for the same reasons.

Don’t Choose a Career Because Someone Says It’s “A Good Job”

Parents, teachers, friends and family will all have opinions.

Some will tell you to go to university. Others will tell you apprenticeships are better. Someone will tell you a particular trade earns good money. Someone else will tell you to work offshore.

Listen to advice. But investigate it yourself.

A career can pay extremely well and still be completely wrong for you.

Money matters. So do:

  • Working conditions
  • Lifestyle
  • Travel
  • Shift patterns
  • Job security
  • Career progression
  • Training requirements
  • The actual work you’ll perform every day

A Good Career Is More Than a Salary Figure

A good career is more than a salary figure.

Research Careers Before You Choose Qualifications

This is one of the most useful things you can do.

Don’t simply pick a course and then ask what jobs it leads to. Try doing it backwards.

Find careers that interest you. Then investigate:

  • What does the job actually involve?
  • Which skills does it require?
  • Which qualifications do employers ask for?
  • What experience is valuable?
  • Which industries employ those people?
  • What could the next career step be?

Then Identify the Route That Could Get You There

Then start identifying the education or apprenticeship route that could help you get there.

You Don’t Need a Perfect Plan

A good career plan at 16 doesn’t need to look like this: Age 16 → exact qualification → exact job → exact employer → exact promotion → exact career.

That’s unrealistic.

A better plan might be: I enjoy practical engineering → Electrical and automation interest me → I’ll explore apprenticeships and technical courses in those areas → I’ll build useful technical skills → I’ll see which opportunities develop from there.

That’s enough. Direction matters more than certainty.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life at 16. Very few people genuinely do.

Start exploring. Understand what different careers actually involve. Think about how you enjoy learning. Look at the skills different jobs require. Ask where those skills could eventually take you.

Then choose your next step. Not your final step.

You don’t need your whole career mapped out. You just need somewhere worthwhile to start.
