From FID to First Production: When Do Energy Projects Actually Start Hiring?

When Will the Work Reach Your Discipline?

A major energy project announces final investment decision (FID). The headline mentions billions in capital expenditure, a construction programme and thousands of potential jobs. But for an engineer, technician or contractor, the useful question is more specific: when will the work actually reach my discipline?

The answer is rarely “immediately”. Recruitment follows the delivery programme, the contracting strategy and the readiness of each work package. Understanding that sequence can help professionals prepare before vacancies become widely visible.

FID is a commitment, not a mass recruitment date

FID normally signals that the project owners have approved the investment and intend to move forward. It does not mean every construction, commissioning or operations position is ready to fill.

Some early engineering and project controls roles may already be in place. Others are mobilised after contracts are awarded, design deliverables are released, long-lead equipment is ordered and construction schedules become firm.

The hiring waves to watch

  • Engineering and project management: Design engineering, procurement, planning, cost control, quality and technical assurance are often active early. The size of these teams depends on how much design was completed before FID.
  • Fabrication and construction: Supervisors, trades, inspectors, logistics, HSE and construction management typically increase as fabrication yards and site packages mobilise.
  • Pre-commissioning and commissioning: Systemisation, completions, electrical and instrumentation testing, mechanical completion, flushing, energisation and functional testing bring a different mix of specialists.
  • Operations and maintenance: Asset owners progressively recruit or transfer operators, maintainers, reliability engineers and support personnel ahead of handover and start-up.

Why contract awards matter

A headline investment figure tells you the scale of a project. An EPC award, fabrication package or commissioning contract can tell you which organisation may be responsible for delivering the next stage.

That distinction matters. The project owner might never advertise many of the roles directly. Recruitment may sit with EPC contractors, specialist subcontractors, fabrication yards, labour suppliers or the eventual operating company.

How to position yourself before the demand arrives

Track project phase rather than just the project name. Identify the owner, principal contractors and major packages. Follow verified announcements about contract awards, fabrication starts, site mobilisation, mechanical completion and planned start-up.

Then align your CV and professional profile with the stage that uses your skills. A commissioning technician and a civil construction supervisor may be watching the same project, but their likely recruitment windows are different.

The strongest project opportunities are often recognised before a job advert appears. The advantage comes from understanding where the project sits in its delivery cycle—and which organisations are responsible for the work.
