Getting your GCSE results can feel like a defining moment.

For some people, the results will be exactly what they hoped for.

For others, they might open their results and immediately start wondering what happens next.

And for many 16-year-olds, there is another problem entirely:

You’re being asked to make decisions about your future when you might not even know what careers are available.

College? Sixth form? An apprenticeship? A T Level? University eventually? Start working?

There are plenty of options — and choosing between them isn’t always straightforward.

Your GCSE results are a starting point, not a career verdict.

Option 3: College and Further Education

College is another common route into technical careers.

Questions to Ask About a College Course

College can help you develop foundational knowledge and practical skills before progressing into employment or an apprenticeship.

If you’re considering college, don’t simply look at the name of the course.

  • What qualification will I receive?
  • What practical skills will I develop?

The course itself matters.

But where that course can take you matters even more.

Option 4: A Levels and University

Not every technical career starts with an apprenticeship.

For people who enjoy academic study and potentially want to become professional engineers, the A Level and university route may be appropriate.

A Graduate Engineering Pathway

Again, there isn’t one fixed route.

Engineers can move into technical leadership, project engineering, commissioning, operations, management and specialist disciplines.

What If You Didn’t Get the GCSE Results You Wanted?

This is important.

Not getting the results you hoped for can be disappointing.

And some apprenticeships, colleges and training programmes will have specific entry requirements.

But that doesn’t automatically mean the career you were considering is no longer possible.

Depending on your circumstances, options might include:

  • Resitting particular GCSEs
  • Taking an alternative college course
  • Completing a foundation or introductory programme
  • Developing additional qualifications
  • Applying for a different apprenticeship route
  • Building experience before progressing further

A Different Route Doesn’t Mean a Different Destination

You may need to take a different route.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need a different destination.

Careers are rarely as perfectly planned as they appear afterwards.

People retrain. They change disciplines. They gain additional qualifications. They discover careers they didn’t know existed. They move sideways before moving upwards.

Your GCSE results matter because they can influence your immediate options.

But they don’t define the next 40 or 50 years of your working life.

What Kind of Technical Career Could Suit You?

If you don’t know which career to choose, start with what interests you.

Do you enjoy electricity, circuits and understanding how equipment is powered? You might want to explore Electrical careers. Electrical professionals can work with motors, switchgear, cables, protection systems, HV/LV equipment and electrical distribution.

Do you enjoy understanding how machinery works? Explore Mechanical careers. Mechanical professionals can work with pumps, compressors, turbines, valves, rotating equipment and mechanical systems.

Are you precise and interested in sensors, measurement and fault finding? Explore Instrumentation careers. Instrumentation professionals work with equipment used to measure things such as pressure, temperature, flow and level.

Do computers and engineering both interest you? Explore Automation and Control. Automation professionals work with technologies such as PLCs, SCADA, DCS and industrial control systems. It’s where software, electrical equipment, instrumentation and machinery increasingly come together.

Do you enjoy making and building things? Explore Welding and Fabrication. These skills are used throughout construction, manufacturing, energy and major infrastructure projects.

Where Could Those Skills Eventually Take You?

This is where career decisions become more interesting.

The technical skills you develop early in your career can potentially be used across multiple industries.

An Electrical Technician might eventually work in offshore wind, then power generation, then a major data centre project.

An Instrument Technician might develop into commissioning and later work on LNG or hydrogen projects.

A Mechanical Technician might gain experience with rotating equipment and progress into specialist maintenance or commissioning.

Your first industry doesn’t necessarily have to be your last.

Skills can travel.

And understanding which skills transfer between roles and industries can create opportunities throughout your career.

Don’t Choose Your Entire Career at 16

There can be enormous pressure on young people to answer the question:

“What do you want to do when you leave school?”

But there’s a problem with that question.

You can’t choose between careers you’ve never heard of.

Most 16-year-olds aren’t going to understand the difference between an Instrument Technician, Commissioning Engineer, Electrical Supervisor or Automation Technician.

Why would they?

Instead of trying to plan your entire working life, start with smaller questions.

  • What subjects do I enjoy?
  • Do I prefer practical or classroom-based learning?
  • Do I enjoy solving problems?
  • Do I like working with tools and equipment?
  • Am I interested in computers and technology?
  • Would I enjoy working outdoors or travelling?
  • Do I want to start earning while learning?

Build Skills, Not Just Job Titles

Those answers can start pointing you towards different career pathways.

One of the biggest lessons you can learn early in your career is that a job title isn’t everything.

Skills create opportunities.

Someone who starts as an Electrical Apprentice could eventually develop experience in:

  • Electrical maintenance
  • High-voltage systems
  • Commissioning
  • Instrumentation
  • Control systems
  • Supervision
  • Project delivery

Your First Decision Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect

Their career could move upwards.

But it could also move sideways into another technical specialism.

That’s why your first career decision doesn’t need to be perfect.

You need a starting point that allows you to learn, develop and build valuable skills.
